Tla'tollis
SUMMARY
Otomi Legends (Leyendas Otomíes), it’s an interdisciplinary project that recovers parts of the oral tradition of the Otomi people, a large Indigenous nation from the center of Mexico -where the heritage of the artist comes from-, and with the help of graphic art and augmented reality creates multimedia pieces complete with the narration of the legend that inspired each piece, this narration is accessible in English, Spanish, Nahuatl, and Otomí.
Each of the 12 pieces -planned to be created in its first edition-, will be accessible vía smartphones and. Sharing those stories allow the Otomies to keep their voices and traditions alive.
DEVELOPMENT OF THE PROJECT
- We were granted a 3-month residency at the Mexican Consulate in SF, between January and March 2020.
- Currently collaborating with a group of artists and programmers developing the digital platform and animations for the project.
- Murals commissioned in Oaxaca, Mexico City, Puebla City, San Francisco, and Ithaca, NY.
- Created the book cover for ‘Raising the Roof. A practical guide for participant-centered participation’ by author Eva Jo Meyers.

‘LA CAZA’ - ‘THE HUNT’
“Two coyotes were hunting a rabbit in the field, but since they were competing they were getting in each other’s way. After a while, it was pretty evident that they were not going to catch the rabbit so one of them told the other coyote: ‘If we keep fighting we will never catch the rabbit and we'll both starve and die’. So they agreed to work together to hunt the rabbit and became a pack.”

“On a sunny day, a father deer took his little calf on a walk through the forest. He explained how mother nature takes care of us, giving food to eat, provides them with shelter and medicine and his love and connection with the forest was such that branches and leaves, flowers started growing out of his antlers.
The baby deer was in awe being surrounded by the growing love of his father, and it grew so much that he eventually disappeared merging with the forest, staying with his kid forever.”

“There's a series of populations in the mountains of La Sierra Norte that lived very far away from one another, as a result, people barely developed the ability to speak because they wouldn't have others to speak to. That is why many of them started speaking to the deer, rabbits, and birds around them. They realized how particularly beautiful it was when birds gathered atop the trees to sing. Little by little, they realized they could use the birds’ language to communicate at long distances amongst humans through whistling, and more and more people started doing so. And that is how birds taught humans to talk and to listen to each other.”
